As Europe’s energy systems become increasingly decentralised and digital, one question is gaining importance: how can emerging technologies help consumers participate more actively in the energy transition?
For the DIGITISE project, answering this question means developing practical digital solutions that make energy management more accessible, intelligent and responsive to consumers’ needs. This research was recently presented at IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT) Europe 2026 in Budapest, Hungary, by Titos Georgoulakis, R&D Software Engineer, representing the UBITECH team.
Connecting DIGITISE with the power systems community
IEEE PES ISGT is an international conference dedicated to advancing innovation in smart grids. It brings together researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers to shape the future of power systems. The 2026 edition, organised by the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) gathered global experts to explore how sustainability, digitalisation, artificial intelligence, and autonomous operation can jointly support the green transition by addressing emerging challenges such as inertia scarcity, system stability, and flexibility in increasingly complex power systems, under the theme “From Flexibility to Autonomy – Smart Grids for a Sustainable and Stable Future.”
For DIGITISE, participation offered an opportunity to present its ongoing research, discuss technical approaches with specialists, exchange perspectives with researchers working on similar challenges, and contribute to the global collaboration in power and energy innovation.
These exchanges are valuable for connecting the project’s technical developments with broader research priorities and industry needs. They also contribute to the dissemination of DIGITISE results beyond the consortium, encouraging dialogue on how innovative digital solutions can be applied in real-world energy environments.
Reflecting on the experience, Titos commented:
“IEEE PES ISGT 2026 was such an interesting and interactive conference with lots of great researchers showcasing their hard work. I showcased our work with the UBITECH team and our overall work for the DIGITISE project to various people in the energy industry.”
Making energy systems more intelligent and consumer-oriented
The poster presentation “A Conversational Agentic Interface to Physics-Based Household Digital Twins for Residential Energy Decision Support” introduced the research undertaken within DIGITISE by the project coordinator, UBITECH, (Costas Mylonas, Titos Georgoulakis and Magda Foti), and its contribution to the project’s wider technological framework.
DIGITISE is developing an interconnected set of digital tools designed to help consumers and prosumers better understand their energy consumption, optimise their energy use and explore opportunities to participate in flexibility markets.
Within this framework, UBITECH contributes to the development of digital services that support consumer participation and energy management. The project’s approach combines data-driven technologies, analytics and user-oriented applications to translate complex energy information into more practical insights and services.
The research is particularly relevant as electricity networks accommodate increasing amounts of renewable energy, distributed energy resources and more variable consumption patterns. Digital solutions can help households become more informed and active participants while supporting the wider energy system’s need for flexibility.
As DIGITISE continues developing and validating its technologies across four demonstration sites in Greece, Spain, Ireland and Croatia, engagement with the international research community remains an important part of translating research into practical solutions for Europe’s energy transition.
Join forces with DIGITISE – the digital energy revolution is just getting started!
